Saturday 14 September 2019 – Vathi

Really not much to report today.  We have had a rest day.  The town of Vathi is sweet and the marina, though expensive is charming and small. We sat in the bar in the morning using their WIFI.  Had lunch in town and then an ice cream.  We were going to go swimming (there is a little access to the sea just past the marina wall – not really what you would call a beach) but the wind got up to 15-19 knots here in the harbour, so the water would have been a bit rough.  The only excitement was when most of the marina staff brought a small sailboat into the berth next to us.  It had it’s mooring line snap and had to be moved. There was no crew aboard so we presume it was a permanent resident.

Dinner in town.  The town was quite busy because there was a wedding.

Friday 24 May 2019 – Gouvia

Well all the work is done, but we still have to sort the boat out to go.  With all the workmen around over the last two days this really hasn’t been possible.  Richard has had a real go at the junk thrown into the forward cabin.  I got enthusiastic and decided to wash the two large fenders we keep at the stern. They really were horrid.  I scrubbed and scrubbed but they are still fairly disreputable, but greatly improved.  We did a bit more shopping just in the marina supermarket.  We had a word with the marina about renewing our contract.  It runs out in July.  If we are moving I don’t want to take long on the boat and try to get to Sicily for the winter.  I can’t just leave the new place in a state and go away.  It will drive me mad.  So we agreed that if we move we stay here for the winter.  If we don’t move we will go on to Italy in September.  The marina have said there is no loss on fees if we wait to renew until we get back here in late June. Wednesday 18 September 2019 – Sagiada

Another lazy morning. We had considered staying for another night but we decided it was too dull and we would move on.  We had in mind this little port of Sagiada where we stayed last year and had an excellent meal and sojourn.  We set off in virtually no wind.  We hadn’t far to go.  A trip of about 9 miles only.  We motored all the way. One little hiccup in the journey.  As we were approaching the port Richard had the overwhelming need to go to the toilet. Therefore he left me helming.  I was on autopilot and going nicely.  I knew that the approach to the port was through shallows so I was really relying on the plotter and autopilot.  The buzzer sounded for arrival at a waypoint and I went to press the button to move to the next direction when nothing happened. After pressing the button three times the boat suddenly turned to go back in the opposite direction!  If it hadn’t been for the shallows I could just have turned around, but I really didn’t know the safe route. Friday 30 August 2019 – Gouvia

Well, now back on the boat.  We flew in last night.  The flight was delayed by an hour because of flight control problems at Gatwick.  So we didn’t get to the boat until midnight local time.  We just made up the bed and fell into it.  We had a meal at the airport so food didn’t seem important. We got up at 9am (which with the time difference felt like 7am) to do our chores and be ready for the man who did our wood work (more later) to come.  We have no food on board so we took the washing left over from July to the laundry and then had breakfast in one of the cafés.  The problem is that it is terribly hot.  The forecast is for 34C and it almost feels like that already. Back at the boat I manage to unpack, but then just fell asleep on the bed under the fan for over half an hour. So the wood work.  We have had a man re-varnish the whole of the companion way.  It was in a state.  The work cost a small fortune, but the result is spectacular.  The wood is so smooth and shiny that
