Well, now back on the boat.  We flew in last night.  The flight was delayed by an hour because of flight control problems at Gatwick.  So we didn’t get to the boat until midnight local time.  We just made up the bed and fell into it.  We had a meal at the airport so food didn’t seem important.

We got up at 9am (which with the time difference felt like 7am) to do our chores and be ready for the man who did our wood work (more later) to come.  We have no food on board so we took the washing left over from July to the laundry and then had breakfast in one of the cafés.  The problem is that it is terribly hot.  The forecast is for 34C and it almost feels like that already. Back at the boat I manage to unpack, but then just fell asleep on the bed under the fan for over half an hour.

So the wood work.  We have had a man re-varnish the whole of the companion way.  It was in a state.  The work cost a small fortune, but the result is spectacular.  The wood is so smooth and shiny that we don’t want to walk on it. He comes back today with a new wooden main hatch.  The old one was flaking away by the minute.  We had thought of a plastic one instead, but were told it would not last well. The new one is also beautiful.  The carpenter also fixed the missing felt from the runners on the hatch.  So we are now better than new.

Also the new water heater seems to have solved the leak problem.  We have left the pump on and it no longer seems to come on for no reason. Cross fingers that the one leak we feared (the water tank) is not there!

After the carpenter finished the initial installation of the new hatch, we couldn’t stand doing anything more and we went to the pool for the afternoon.  Had a light bite of lunch and kept reasonably cool by taking a dip every so often.  Back to the boat for the carpenter to finish the hatch.  One problem by then there was a power cut in the marina and we didn’t get to shower.  But before dinner the power came back and we were able to fill the water tank.

Dinner was nearly a catastrophe as there were initially no tables at either restaurant.  But a table came vacant after we had a cocktail at one of the cafes.  Hope to get away tomorrow, but must shop for food first!Friday 30 August 2019 – Gouvia
