Thursday 30 May 2019 – Mytika, on mainland Greece

We finally left the marina at about 10am.  Richard had found a destination in the pilot book that sounded interesting.  It was only 17 miles away and is supposed to be a real Greek village not much touched by tourism.  Neither of us could really make out what the mooring arrangements are for visiting yachts, but we were bound to find out.

So down the canal we went. On leaving we hoped we might be able to put a sail up, but as usual the wind was on the nose.  This is very annoying.  The prevailing wind here is supposed to be a north westerly.  That would mean we could sail as we are going south.  But with our luck the wind has consistently been a southerly or south easterly meaning on the nose and no sailing.  The real annoyance is that it is bound to be the usual north westerly when we return, going north of course.

The weather is not as good as we had hoped.  The sky has clouded over a bit and it is quite cool.  Again we need to put long sleeves on to keep warm.  As we were complaining to each other about the winds, they shifted a bit.  Not enough wind to just sail, but we got the Genoa up and motor sailed.  While we were doing this we spotted dolphins!  First of the season.  They were some way off, but were putting on quite a show leaping out of the sea.

When we got to the harbour it was even less touristy than we were led to believe.  We were very unsure where to go.  There is a short stretch of wall after the ferry berth that seems to be for visitors.  We were uncertain if there was somewhere we could moor side to, but a helpful Dutchman directed us to a spot on the wall and we managed to let chain out and moor stern to perfectly.  Quite an achievement for the first go of the season on anchor.

The group of yachts on the wall is very international.  There is the Dutch boat at the end.  Then there is us, Brits, followed by a Norwegian boat.  Later in the afternoon a German boat came in.  There was another British boat, but it left after lunch.

The town closes down completely between 2 and 6pm.  We had a little walk around.  It really is just a local Greek town.  We wound up at the end of the front in a little restaurant with only outside tables serving just fish.  All very sweet.  The crews from two of the other boats were also there!  There is some suggestion of thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon going into the night.  The next port would just be an anchorage, so we might stay here another day.
